With an investment value of AUD $13 million, this project comprises 12 fully pre-engineered steel broiler farming houses with a total structural steel tonnage of 2,328 tons. It represents a benchmark in modern, biosecure, and highly automated poultry housing across the Australian market.

Engineered for Australian Conditions

Every broiler house is designed and fabricated following Australian Standards AS/NZS 4600 (cold-formed steel structures) and AS/NZS 1170 (loading code). The primary load-bearing system adopts a cold-formed steel portal frame configuration, hot-dip galvanized to C3/C4 corrosion resistance, ensuring a service life of over 25 years even in Melbourne’s variable coastal climate.

Key structural components include:

Portal rigid frames made from heavy-gauge (2.5mm–4.0mm) G450 galvanized steel.

Purlins and girts using light-gauge cold-formed C/Z sections for optimal roof and wall support.

Corrugated steel cladding (0.42mm BMT, Colorbond® finish) for high wind uplift resistance (rated to N4/C4).

Insulated sandwich panels (50mm thick, polyurethane foam core) for ceiling and partition walls, achieving R-value > 3.5.

Comprehensive Turnkey Scope: Design, Fabrication, Installation & Commissioning

ZHM Metal Engineering executed a full design-supply-install-commission package, eliminating interface risks for the client.

1. Design & Detailing

Using Tekla Structures and AutoCAD, our in-house engineers produced 3D models, shop drawings, and connection details. BIM models integrated mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) runs – including ventilation ducts, feed lines, water pipes, and lighting conduits – into the steel framework to avoid clashes.

2. Fabrication

All 2,328 tons of steel were precision-fabricated in our ISO 9001-certified workshop. Processes included:

♦Automated roll-forming of purlins and girts to exact lengths.
♦CNC punching, drilling, and sawing for bolt-up connections.
♦Hot-dip galvanizing (minimum 80µm coating thickness) after fabrication.
♦Factory assembly of bolt-up portal sub-frames to verify fit.

3. Installation

On-site erection was completed within 14 weeks by Australian-licensed crew partners. The bolted connection system allowed rapid assembly without welding, reducing labor costs and weather delays. Each broiler house measures 150m long × 18m wide × 4.5m eave height, providing a floor area of 2,700m² per house – total built area 32,400m².

4. Commissioning & Handover

♦Post-installation, our team conducted:
♦Load testing of portal frames (simulated wind and live loads).
♦Air leakage tests for insulated panels and sealed joints.
♦Integration tests with client’s automated feeding, drinking, and ventilation control systems.
♦Biosecurity validation – all steel surfaces are smooth, non-porous, and washable, meeting Australian poultry biosecurity guidelines.
